KidsWrites Residency

Partner schools receive an additional six workshops to work with Skylight teaching artists to stage and perform their own writing.

About the Program

Students at Milwaukee Public Schools participate in creative writing workshops to generate stories and poems inspired by a theme.

Composers select 8 to 10 pieces to transform into songs.

A show using 35 – 40 pieces of uncorrected student writing is staged and performed in a fast paced, funny and profound show. Your students will see and hear what their peers are thinking, feeling, and writing, and will learn the importance of spelling.

“KidsWrites gives our school a new perspective on writing. All of the students are motivated to write. They look forward to the workshops and performing the piece for their peers. The best part was the entire process. It reminds me that writing doesn’t always have to be a formal essay.” Teacher from 95th Street School
