MILWAUKEE, WI (March 5, 2026) – Skylight Music Theatre’s 25th anniversary production of The Spitfire Grill is earning widespread critical acclaim, capturing the hearts of both audiences and critics with its warmth, heart, and emotional resonance.

Critics have praised this theatrical homecoming as a quietly powerful production… that smolders with heart, hope, and small-town redemption” (BroadwayWorld) and describes it as a “heartwarming musical” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel), as well as “a charming, entertaining production centering on community, redemption and the joys of second chances in life” (Shepherd Express), underscoring the show’s enduring impact and timely themes of resilience and renewal.

A defining strength of this anniversary production is its exceptional cast and creative team, guided by composer and co-book writer James Valcq, who directs this production with “astute direction” (Shepherd Express). Urban Milwaukee notes that “Valcq directs with masterful understanding of the appeal of the music… while taking his time for emotion to sink in,” while The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel declares that “the cast was exquisitely well chosen.”

BroadwayWorld further highlights the productions’ leading performances, applauding Micah Friedman, who “brings vulnerability and strength to Percy,” Suzanne Graff, who “delivers a beautifully layered performance as Hannah,” and Rachael Zientek, whose Shelby is “equally compelling… Her voice commands the stage.” The Shepherd Express adds that the “cast of seven excel at showcasing who they are through the top-notch songwriting as well as fully understanding their characters.”

There is added significance to experiencing this Wisconsin-born, Wisconsin-set musical at home. As BroadwayWorld observes, “there is something especially meaningful about seeing this Wisconsin-born and Wisconsin-set musical performed here, where its story of resilience and renewal feels right at home.”

“This anniversary production is both a tribute and a new chapter for The Spitfire Grill,” says Valcq. “We’ve expanded certain musical and narrative elements to deepen the story’s folktale spirit, and the cast has brought extraordinary insight and emotion to every role. Experiencing how audiences are connecting with this version, here in Wisconsin where it all began, makes this celebration especially meaningful.”
